Portrait of my Grandfather

This is a portrait of my maternal Grandfather. My brother and I called him 'Poppy'. This was drawn from a photo of him when he was well into his 80's. He was the kindest, sweetest, most thoughtful man. He would cry when we went away to camp for summers and then he would cry when we came home. If we did well on a test, if we achieved anything, however big or small, he would say, "I read about it on the front page of the New York Times!' We all adored him. He's been gone for a long time now, but I know I can speak for my family when I say that we still miss him like crazy.

I love the portrait of your Grandfather...makes me think of my Grandfather who is 98 and in a nursing home now.

You have managed to capture the gentleness of the man!

Cheers

Well, thank you Henson...glad that you got such a great sense of him from the drawing and comments...I've inherited the 'crying' thing from him...it's just in the genes!! Matt really left me speechless this time...and, my Grandfather would have cried....!

I know what you mean. I miss my grandpas too. What a nice drawing of your grandpa too. Being a grandma, I know what it's like to cry when the grandkids arrive and when they go. :)

Thank you Anna...I miss seeing his face, but, the portrait looks so much like him, his Spirit, that it's quite comforting...

Awwww...Carol, how sweet...yup he just couldn't contain himself...looks like you've got the crying gene too...it's a gift!!!

What a great story Amy. I love the colors you chose to depict Poppy - so warm and cheery. A beautiful portrait.

Christy, thank you..I did this years ago...he was such a special man..and he was warm and cheery...you would have loved him!

Triz, you would have loved him too...he always became very emotional during the Jewish Holidays...just weeping into his chicken soup...I wish I had been older to appreciate his story and how much was lost during the Holocaust...he and my Grandmother were here for many years before the War, but many of their family members stayed in Russia and Poland...

What a heartwarming story. He has such a kind face. My Gram was a lot like you describe your Poppy. She too has been gone far too long but not a day goes by I dont think of her. She was my "real" mom!

Eva, he was very, very kind...but my Gram, she was my angel......she stayed sweet right up to the day she died when she was 90...I miss her like crazy too..so, I know how you feel!
