Beach Week

We are on vacation this week and we are sticking close to home to enjoy the beauty of our favorite beach here in Rhode Island. We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the beach, so this is close to heaven for us. We both need a well deserved break from all the action. This is a fabulous walking beach. If you walk the entire beach back and forth, or however you do it, it's a healthy 3 mile walk. And we LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to walk. The picture of the elderly couple is so touching to me. It speaks volumes about them, the placement of his cane, the way they were together. They spent the afternoon watching their grandchildren having the time of their lives. My husband and I will be them one day, because we will never stop going to the beach, even if we have to be wheeled there! The other photos are my husband relaxing (I could have gotten him sleeping, mouth open, but, I opted out...this was nice), and our 'stuff'....we're headed back tomorrow, Wednesday, Thursday.....we should be well vacationed by the end of this coming weekend!!!

Girl Whirl in Lace

It's been so very sultry and steamy for well over a week now, that for most of that time we have kept the winds closed to keep out the humidity. We have a 'system' to keep the cool air IN THE HOUSE. But, the poor kitty's miss their spots by the windows. Little Girl Whirl loves to 'hide' behind the lace curtain on the first floor by the stairs. Today, she didn't quite make it all the way under the curtain at first and she looked so pretty, draped in lace, well, I simply couldn't resist the shot! It was a delight, after the storms of the past 2 days wake up this morning and throw open every window in the house!

The Launch Position

Lennart Neilson loved his electron microscope. He also loved photography and nature. He was an explorer, a pioneer. He was the first to give us a glimpse into the womb and see, simply, how we develop over those 9 months. We were in awe. The pictures were in Life Magazine. But then, he published the pictures in a book, called, 'Behold, Man.' I was taken by the sheer beauty of the pictures and my far off desire to have children. When I first drew this picture, and showed it to people, I would always turn it around, like the top picture. But, after I had my son, I learned that I need not have changed anything, because I drew it in the 'launch position.' That was an expression my OBGYN used, when it was about time to deliver my bundle of joy, head first. Hence, the launch position!

Happy Dragonfly
Isn't is a wonder, when you can step outside, into your own garden and continually find treasures, daily reminders of the seasons of life. I was outside watering some of the lilies by the side of the house, and this dragonfly was hopping from lily top to lily top. I raced inside to get my camera, hoping not to miss the moment, and sure enough, with what seems to be a big smile, camera ready, this dragonfly stayed long enough for me to get this one good picture. He/she was a happy dragonfly, and I was a happy 'Lilley'!Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Collecting Rocks

This drawing, done with Prismacolor pencils, was a prelude to my deep love of rock collecting. I have a wonderful collection of ocean rocks, which thankfully, I have well contained in huge glass vases, each rock, carefully placed for space and viewing. When I collect rocks, I am usually looking for the rocks with lines going through them. Dark rocks with light lines or stripes and on a rare occasion, a light colored rock with dark lines. The drawing shows my child-like awe, when finding just one rock...WOW...what a treasure! How unique, how was THIS rock formed, where did the lines come from, how did they get there....so many questions. When I go to the beach, with yellow bucket in tow, I am on a mission to scour the shore for the rocks, ( sometimes very, very tiny rocks) and oh the THRILL when I can see that I've had a good 'haul' to bring home! The photograph of the rock above the drawing was a very rare find, and needless to say, I have it on the legde by my kitchen sink, so that it's in my view all the time!!
