Summers' End

I am always is deep denial when Summer starts to fade into Autumn. The sun is clearly lower in the sky, the nights are chilly, as are some of the mornings. Racing to the beach on the weekends is not a 'given'. BUT, as many flowers have come and gone, the heartiness of the sunflower, the last holdout, remains steady. Some have come and gone as well, some are just on their way out, while others are still getting ready to pop. They are big, they are beautiful, and I see why Georgia and VanGogh had such a field day painting them!

I also get into denial mode when the summer is a bout to end - we had our first rain today, lasted all of 3 minutes, but it's in the air :-) love the sunflowers!

I'm so happy for you, Kim, that 'hope Springs eternal...' especially after a long Winter...I know that Fall will be beautiful, but, I'm still making the transition in my head...not quite there yet...the sunflowers were quite the challenge to photograph..even the buds...I love the top one as well!

I don't know if you're aware of this, but in the UK, the sunflower is the symbol for hospice care, and until early this year, I worked for 6 years for the major UK hospice charity. Your description is very apt for both the flower and for what it symbolizes! :-)

Hey Layne...no, I did not know that about the sunflower...and how apt that you would even mention it tonight as my Mom is in the hospital in NY w/pneumonia...she is almost 85 and very frail..but, she's getting excellent care. I will probably go into NY when she is released (I'm 3 1/2 hours away in RI) to help tend to her then...so, please, keep her in you prayers.

I love the summer, unfortunately we have had another poor summer in the UK. Now I am wishing we could afford to have a week away somewhere hot and sunny. The sunflowers certainly help to brighten up a dreary day!

Love the sunflowers!!

I have to say I don't look forward to the fall even with the stunning fall colors in our area!
I'm not a winter person and I'm always thinking of the warm sun, sand and beaches...always have!!
I thought for many years I should be living in the Caribbean or someplace with similiar weather...

Best wishes for you mother!
