On-Line Help for Victims of Sandy

Water reaches the street level of the flooded Battery Park Underpass, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012
I have just been looking at hundreds of images from Sandy, and came across this web site, Mashable. You can help!!!

Mashable has highlighted five organizations running campaigns that help those affected by Sandy's wrath. Have you heard of other non-profits or online campaigns raising money to help the victims?
  • The Red Cross: If you would like to give to the Red Cross, which has opened more than 190 shelters along the East Coast and has hundreds of disaster relief workers on standby, you can donate online, by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS, or by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10. The Red Cross is also seeking blood and platelet donations. To learn more, visit RedCrossBlood.org.
  • AmeriCares: You can donate to AmeriCares’ relief fund to help the organization, which is distributing supplies to 130 clinics in the 13 states affected by Sandy.
  • World Vision: Despite flooding at its Bronx, N.Y. warehouse, World Vision is organizing relief efforts. You can text “GIVEUSA” to 777444 to make a $10 donation, or donate online to help..
  • International Medical Corps: Another option for donating abroad is the International Medical Corp, who are coordinating efforts in Haiti.
  • New York Blood Center: You can donate blood, which will be used to help injured people, as well as hospital blood banks affected by the storm.
On a personal note, my niece is still stranded in Hoboken after her first floor apartment was flooded. Many many are still stuck in their apartments, about 25,000 and this city remains in great need. The National Guard has arrived. Please pray.

Post script: 11/1/2012 My niece, along w/ many many others have been able to get get into their apartments to clean up, out of the apartment buildings now that the water has receded and there is no fear of being electrocuted from downed wires...so many many still in dire need!!

Final Thoughts on the Flood

The sun is out, it was a gorgeous day. I knew that the waters had receded alot, even though the levels are still above flood stage. I went back down to the Village to take a look/see. I saw that many of the docks had been washed away from the Cove. I saw less of a crowd. In fact, there was no crowd at all, except for this one woman. I couldn't help but notice her, as she stood alone looking over the Bridge at the water, which had just done so much damage. I couldn't help but think, that she was thinking about her parents, grandparents, and great great-grandparents. She just witnessed something which possibly none of them was party to. You could feel her thinking about them. So, I stood back, not wanting to disturb her, and snapped this photo.

I was glad to see some swans on-land, but I have been wondering about their nests and the signets which are soon to follow. How were thy effected, if at all. Did they sense the danger which was coming, and move the eggs to safety. Time will tell.
No, this was not Haiti, this was not New Orleans, but my local supermarket is still underwater, and FEMA has heard from over 5,000 families so far. The clean-up is just getting started, but we will be talking about the flood of 2010 for many years to come.

A Happy Easter and final nights of Passover!
